Camp Books will be launching their Mapping Queer Lambeth pamphlet, which you will be able to pick up at this event. The pamphlet and project charts Lambeth’s rich LGBTQIA+ history through the physical buildings, spaces and spots across the borough. Historic cartographic publications such as For Your Convenience, A learned Dialogue Instructive To all Londoners & London Visitors (1937) London Gay to Z (1970s) and Bob Damron’s “Address Books” (1960s-70s) all sent readers in London, to Lambeth. From the masquerading and merrymaking of the Vauxhall Pleasure gardens in the 18th century, to Brixton’s place as the hearth and home of the activists in the Gay Liberation movement of the 1970s, the neighbourhoods that make up Lambeth have an incredible role to play as a site in which queer history has been made over the centuries.
Camp Books’ pamphlet will highlight the borough’s physical significance to queer, trans, and gender non-conforming people over the centuries, with an emphasis on making the information held in Lambeth’s historic archives accessible to its inhabitants and welcoming to its visitors. Camp Books’ Brooke Palmieri will lead the discussion along with guest speakers.
