Bringing Peterloo Back to Life with Graphic Novelist Polyp

March 21, 2022, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Graphic novelist ‘Polyp’ talks about the creation of his visual account of the 1819 Manchester massacre, Peterloo.

Graphic novelist ‘Polyp’ (aka Paul Fitzgerald) talks about the creation of his visual account of the 1819 Manchester massacre, when armed troops charged a huge, peaceful pro-democracy protest: https://ethicalshop.org/peterloo-witnesses-to-a-massacre-by-polyp-poole-and-schlunke.html . The ‘verbatim’ narrative includes vivid quotes from John Benjamin Smith, father of Jemina Durning who financed Lambeth’s Durning Library.

Find out how the script was constructed from authentic period documents, and get a behind the scenes look at hidden visual references in many of the drawings.

Paul chaired the campaign for a permanent memorial at the location of the attack. A freelance professional cartoonist, his work has been used by a range of publishers and campaign groups, including Amnesty, New Internationalist and Friends of the Earth. He also builds campaign props for street events, and is currently finishing a graphic novel biography of Thomas Paine.

Event organised by the Friends of Durning Library
