Ackee & Saltfish: Screening and Oceanic dance workshop
November 6, 2022, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Event Navigation

Ackee & Saltfish is a performance screening and workshop, organised by artist Juliette Gampert.
Taking place at San Mei Gallery, the evening will begin with a screening of Gampert’s performance ‘Ackee & Saltfish’, created in 2019.
Named after the Jamaican national dish that the grandmother of the artist often cooks for her, the performance is a collaboration between them, a symbol of the transgenerational dialogues born from these dinners. Together, they navigate diasporic longing and hybridity, by taking dancehall and its dance moves as a point of departure.
Chucky Xqlusiv will then lead an “Oceanic dance workshop”, teaching dancehall moves linked to the theme of water.

Through her work, Juliette Gampert explores the concept of diaspora, the collective body and the spiritual and healing dimensions of dance and partying. Her artistic research is motivated by her dance practice of Dancehall, which she uses as a way to reconnect with part of her heritage.
Between 2018 and 2021, she has undertaken an embodied research in Kingston (Jamaica) by filming the dancehall street parties, interviewing and taking dance classes with pioneers of this community.
